Gillian’s Work
I create works to appease the avian and avian-adjacent creatures that live alongside me.
I use animal-like forms to portray my ideas like many folk stories do. My works are my story, my mythology. On the surface, the subjects consist of birds, an equivalent creature, or an aspect of the environment in which I reside. On a deeper level, the subjects depict myself, as I often feel more creature than human. The ideas these entities portray feel more real at times.
In order to advance my visual language, I employ the use of a multitude of learned mediums. I combine them to create unique marks on my chosen surface. These marks are like having my own language. Despite the variety, I often rely on the power of experimental printmaking methods to carry out a concept. This allows for a range of controlled mark-making and the use of photographic imagery. In addition to my 2-dimensional elements, I will incorporate found materials in my pieces. I may use a wide assortment of materials in my works, but keep a consistent visual language of color, texture, and form.
My body of work may not all look the same, but that is what makes it a collection. It’s not just one story or idea. It’s my mythology.
